How to Remove Sticker Residue the Easy Way - Just erase it off!

I stumbled upon this quite a while ago, but I thought I might share it with the world. You can erase sticker residue off.

You start with your sticky surface, just erase it! (That's my Listerine Light in the background!)

Brush that stuff off!

There you go!

Don't bother with the eraser, use a little WD40, it wipes adhesive right off.

- soften with a hair dryer ( low or moderate heat)
- an oil ( lipid) based solvent such as wd40

easy, breezy! nice tip, also you can use rubbing alcohol, lightly dampen a cotton ball and swab the area gently. It comes off easily (but don't rub too rigorously or you'll have bits of cotton stuck to the surface).

For most sticker gunk (windshields, etc...) I squirt a small amount of lighter fluid (charcoal fluid also works) on a paper towel. Then, just scrub the stuff right off. But I love this one. Great tip!

that's all well and good on a hard surface where you can coax the acrylic based adhesive to warm up and roll itself off. but for more delicate surfaces - clear plastic, glass, dust jackets, PAPER - try lighter fluid which is usually naptha. IF that doesn't work, there is a less smelly product called un-du (fave of scrapbookers) which is in the butane-hexane family. i wouldn't advice goo-gone because it adheres to your fingers may stain paper, and goof-off is very strong and will dissolve ink if our rub too hard. but i indeed an eraser is a good first tool.

Depending on the item, you can also use a hairdryer set on anything but "cool shot" (or similar setting). Direct the stream of air onto the sticker. This will soften the adhesive, thus easing removal of the sticker.

Theres a bunch of ways to do this actually, but yours sounds the least messy.

Action figure collectors have been using a rag with lemon scented pledge, or WD40 to get those annoying price tags off their products (dont want those buyers to know how much they REALLY paid for it.) ^_^

Goo Gone works amazingly well on sticker residue as well. Just be careful on painted surfaces as it can liquify it. Also, have you tried the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser? It's worked on stuff I never dreamed it could.

much faster, easier, cleaner, less abrasive and less invasive method: go to the closest hospital emergency room, chat up the cutest nurse you see, and ask for a few adhesive remover pads. they come in little packets, just like the alcohol prep pads but contain C11-12 Isoparaffin, Petroleum Spirits, Isopropyl Palmitate, Isopropyl Myristate, Isopropyl Stearate, and Isopropyl Alcohol. they remove all sticky residues quickly and completely and will not harm the surface you are working on. they may also be available at your local pharmacy in the home-health care section, but i prefer to chat up cute nurses.

This blog-stream helped me greately! My 3-year old decided to put his 4 hot wheels stickers on the shiny black plastic border at the bottom of our brand new 65" DLP TV. When I tore the stickers off, all that was left was a mass of gummy sticker glue. I tried rubbing alcohol - nothing. I tried magic eraser (seems to solve every other problem) - nothing. I tried good ole soap and water with a sponge - nothing. I tried an eraser, and it seemed to have an effect, but it really chewed through my eraser fast and it was far from fast and easy.

Ultimately, the lighter fluid trick was exactly what I needed. It very quickly removed the whole patch of sticker glue. One thing I found was that the cloth used made a big difference on the completeness of the job. Paper towels kept leaving smudges. I found that a cloth baby diaper (extremely handy things) did perfectly. One more thing, the lighter fluid doesn't seem to have damaged the surface of the TV border at all, either. It's just as shiny as it was originally; can't see any difference where the stickers were.

Thanks to all for their idea contributions!

I'm cleaning up my apartment, getting things in order, and someone bought me these little picture frames, with glass that slides out easily from the side, and so they were held in place with little adhesive stickies help keep the product from being damaged while packaged, but are a bitch for the owner, once you get them home and try to use the picture frame... I did a quick search and came up with this blog. It worked like a charm! Thanks for saving several minutes, possibly even an hour or more, of time. Now I can get my pictures in those frames and get back to housecleaning. ;-)

Bella,

Try an oily furniture polish (like liquid gold) and rub it on the sticker with a q-tip. Let it sit and then remove and wipe clean. This should work. If it doesn't you might try goo gone. It is supposed to work on most surfaces. I would try an inconspicuous part of the door first.

If you have a delicate surface that you might be hesitant spraying chemicals onto, you can use Pam (or any non-stick cooking spray). I just used it on an aluminum bike frame loaded with stickers and it worked great.

Thanks to anonymous above for the toothpaste idea..just used it on a nasty sticker residue on a Will Smith Lost & Found CD I picked up at a yard sale. Now the case is sticker crud free and Will has minty fresh breath!

Thanks for posting this. I was having trouble removing sticker residue from something and tried acetone, it didn't work. So I checked the internet and saw this. I tried it, it didn't work right away but then I went back to the acetone and it did work. The eraser must have loosened it up. THANKS!

didn't work for me on glass (car windscreen) neither.

I left the 'mess' in place until I caught-up with my cousin who is a professional auto-windscreen fitter for all types of vehicles; cars, trucks, coaches.

His company train their employees well; he spends nearly as much time in the classroom as 'on the job' and actually learns all about how stickers, glass, tinted screens are made etc. Consequently he knows what effect each chemical/liquid etc will have on glass.

There was no fluid of any type that wouldn't leave some kind of mark. Acetone (nail varninsh remover) would leave a cloudy appearance on the glass. maybe it wouldn't show unless under direct sunlight but it would be there all the same. Similar problem with WD40.

Bearing in mind the sticker residue is on my brand new £30k car, I didn't want any marks left at all.

What he did was to slightly wet the sticker and then, using a kind of razor blade in a holder, kept making tiny 'slides' at the edge of the sticker. When I say tiny I mean like 0.5mm movements (but lots of them)! I admit was not happy and was worried that there would be damage/marks etc.

Well, once he had finished there was absolutely nothing to be seen!!! There was no marks or damage and the whole job (3 tennis ball size stickers residue) took him hardly 10 mins.

The most important thing, he explained, is that the blade is held at 45 degrees with very light pressure and the movements are very very small and fast. He went through a bout 4 blades as another vital point is that the blade is not at all blunt - that's when the damage can happen.

I am very pleased with his work and glad I didn't use any of the suggested fluids. The screen in my car has got IR coating and is a heated screen (ting wires running through it) and he reckons that there would definitely have been a visible mark with any other method than what he did.

Best of all, it didn't cost me a penny!! ;-)

i dont see how anyone could call this gay, or hate you for it, and out of all of the alternatives being posted, hair dryer, wd40, acetone, even TOOTHPASTE, i would never think of using any of those on my ipod touch!!!, that would be ridiculous, but this worked, and only took a minute or two, as compared to spending about an hour getting some stickers off of plastic containers using drain cleaner xD

i know it sounds absurd, but human semen actually works wonders to remove adhesive residue. It can stain porous surfaces, however, so best to collect in a container prior to cleaning and just dab as needed.

And best of all, it's much more fun than alternative methods!

Thank you sooo much Muggsy! I tried pretty much all the methods people posted: nail polish remover, tilex, peanut butter, hot water/soap, wd-40.. all worked minimal results.. but your method with charcoal/lighter fluid worked instantly!! just applied a very tiny amount to a napkin and it just wiped right off leaving no trace! thanks again!

I just purchased a book and had a horrible sticky residue left by the price sticker. I tried almost everything to get rid of it without damaging the book - found this post, tried it and it works a charm! Takes a bit of elbow grease but it gets rid of all of it =D thank you very much for posting this information!
